Each season has its own set of qualities which we naturally absorb into our bodies and minds. As each season goes on we start to form a build-up in the body which if left can start to show symptoms. Late winter/early spring is the Kapha season which is heavy, cold and wet which can cause us to have heavier emotions, fatigue, lethargy, mucous build up, coughs, cold, sluggish digestion and weight gain. The autumn is Vata season which is dry, cold and fast moving and this can leave us feeling unsettled, depleted, anxious, struggling to sleep, bloated, constipated and dry in the body. The summer is Pitta season which is heating and this can leave us feeling burnt out, with allergies and skin rashes, loose stools, acid indigestion, heart burn and heated emotions like anger and frustration.
Ayurveda sees that as we transition from one season to the next, it is a great time to cleanse. A cleanse helps to rid the mind and body of any toxins (ama) that have built up throughout the season, reset digestion and leave us feeling brighter and energised.
There are three phases to an ayurvedic cleanse. We start with phase one in which we remove foods that may cause us digestive upset and start eating a mainly plant based menu full of nutritious whole foods. This phase will last 3 days to give time to gradually lessen our consumption of processed food/sugar/coffee.
This sets us up for phase two (3 days) (our active cleanse phase) where we introduce the mono diet approach. Here we eat kitchari or mung bean soup which will reset and repair digestion. Kitchari is a delicious dish made from mung beans, rice, spices and vegetables. It is a complete meal as it provides the 10 essential amino acids our bodies cannot make. Mung beans are used because of their amazing effects on our body. They are suitable for all doshas (body types), anti-microbial, anti-inflammatory, high in flavonoids which boost immunity, and they have a scrubbing effect on the body stimulating the release of toxins from the blood and tissues. Most people really like this phase of the cleanse as it takes out the decision-making process of what to eat. One pot of kitchari can be made in the morning and eaten throughout the day.
In phase three (4 days or longer if you prefer) we want to start to gradually introduce the plant based whole foods that we were eating in phase one again. Then we slowly begin adding more foods paying attention to foods that many people struggle with such as eggs, wheat, dairy, nuts and soya. This slow approach enables you to notice any digestive symptoms that may come up and begin to learn what your body likes and dislikes.
Ayurveda understands that how we digest our food is as important if not more important than what we are actually eating. Great digestion relies on many factors such as a calm nervous system, chewing our food well, removing distractions, not eating whilst rushing and learning how to eat in line with the ayurvedic daily clock. In your one to one cleanse session you will learn many ayurvedic tips to help calm and ground the body with stress relieving techniques, how to eat mindfully and when to eat to ensure you digest your food well. Your food literally becomes your body's cells - a new meaning to "you are what you eat"!
